THE ÖVNEW restaurant dome, Hesperia Tower Hotel

Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona (Spain) - 2005

A geodesic glass dome at the apex of the Hesperia Tower in Barcelona. The glass dome of the new Hotel Hesperia, designed and constructed by Bellapart for this innovative building was designed by the prestigious architectural firm Richard Rogers Partnership and Alonso-Balaguer.

The roof, measuring 22m in diameter and weighing 42 tons, was constructed in its entirety on the ground and later hoisted up by an 850-ton crane and placed in position at a height of 105m, moving with security the 219 special solar-controlled glass panels that it is made of. This process required 8 months of work on site at Bellapart, SAU, involving not only engineering, but also manufacture and assembly. For the project, a new structural system had to be developed, that was precise and elegant and capable of resisting the incredibly elevated wind load that the dome was under, as well as the load generated during the elevation maneuver.
